What is DBT?
Module 1
Mindfullness
There are always new things to worry about, conversations to rehearse, and activities to plan. Research tells us that when we live in the moment - that is, getting out of our heads and being consciously aware of our surroundings and emotions - we will feel happier and experience less stress. Mindfulness is about being aware of and accepting what’s happening in the present moment.
Module 2
Emotional Regulation
Sometimes we feel like there’s no escape from difficult emotions. But as difficult as it may sound, it is possible to manage them with a little help. Emotion regulation skills help individuals learn to deal with primary emotional reactions before they lead to a chain of distressing secondary reactions and destructive behaviors.
Module 3
Interpersonal Effectiveness
Knowing how you feel and what you want is an important part of building fulfilling connections. Interpersonal effectiveness skills combine listening skills, social skills, and assertiveness training to help individuals learn how to change situations while remaining true to their values.
Module 4
Distress Tolerance
We all experience crises in our lives. Sometimes these crises are big, and sometimes these crises are small. Distress tolerance skills help individuals get through tough times without turning to potentially destructive behaviors. This skill helps individuals learn to cope with uncomfortable emotions in a healthy way.
Can I keep seeing my therapist?
Participation
This group is open to eight participants on a first come first serve basis. All participants are expected to attend all group sessions. Your commitment is essential.
An initial consultation session is required prior to the beginning of the group.
Yes! In fact, DBT Skills Group participants must be meeting regularly with an individual therapist. In DBT, group and individual therapy serve distinct but complementary purposes.
The group therapy sessions primarily focus on psychoeducation and skill-building, providing participants with valuable information, strategies, and practice opportunities to manage their emotions, improve relationships, and cope with distress. The group setting allows for shared experiences, validation, and peer support.
On the other hand, individual therapy is designed for deeper exploration and processing of individual concerns, experiences, and challenges. It provides a confidential space where participants can delve into their personal issues, address co-occurring problems, and work on individualized goals. The individual therapist helps navigate personal challenges, track progress, and tailor interventions to meet the specific needs of each participant.
The combination of group psychoeducation and individual processing creates a comprehensive treatment approach that fosters skill acquisition, emotional exploration, and personal growth. If you are not currently seeing a therapist, we would be happy to match you with one. However, there is no requirement to meet with a TheraCorp psychotherapist.
